PepsiCo Searches for Potato Chip of the Future

What will the potato chip of the future look and taste like? PepsiCo aims to find out. The food and beverage giant announced this week that it is opening a new long-term research laboratory next to the Yale campus in New Haven, Conn.

The facility will employ eight to 10 scientists with backgrounds ranging from sensory to biochemistry. Their goal: To create healthier foods and beverages.

Tropicana Promotes OJ As Daily Fruit Serving

Somewhere Missy "Misdemeanor" Elliot and Nelly Furtado sigh a deep sigh:
The "Get Your Fruit On!" campaign, launching this month to tie in with National Fruit and Vegetable Month, looks to get the word out that 7 in 10 adults, as well as most children, are not consuming the USDA-recommended four fruit servings -- and that an eight-ounce glass of OJ delivers two of those servings. "Surprisingly, we've learned a majority of orange juice drinkers are unaware that 100% orange juice contributes to their daily fruit intake," commented Tropicana CMO Andy Horrow in the PepsiCo brand's announcement of the campaign.

The Big Fizz at PepsiCo

A fairly fascinating look at the man agitating for all the change at PepsiCo. Including a peek into the Big Bang project that had the company simultaneously redesigning seven brands, creating brand manifestos, and generating Super Bowl ads.
Companies often perfect each stage of a rebranding plan before moving on to the next one. For example, the design agency typically settles on a logo before handing off to the people working on the package. To save time, d'Amore decided to adopt the so-called concurrent model: design the logos, create the packaging, shoot the TV commercials, and so forth simultaneously. He acknowledges that this is riskier but insists the enhanced speed and agility are worth it. "Aiming for perfection is the enemy of good progress," d'Amore says. And if getting the project done in time meant inserting himself in the creative process—highly unusual for a CEO—then so be it. After all, he had marketing experience.

Also, he's something of a hands-on manager:
One of the first Arnell-d'Amore productions was a TV spot for SoBe Lifewater, a beverage d'Amore wanted to reposition to take on Coca-Cola's (KO) vitaminwater. It was an early glimpse of d'Amore's management style. After giving the job to Arnell Group, he fired SoBe's existing ad agency, Bartle Bogle Hegarty. He and Arnell then cooked up the idea for the ad together—a sendup of Michael Jackson's Thriller video featuring lizards dancing with model Naomi Campbell. Later, d'Amore flew to Los Angeles to help edit the commercial.

Sugar Is Back on Food Labels, This Time as a Selling Point

Kraft, Pepsi, ConAgra and others now touting the presence of real sugar in foods as a positive.
The turnaround comes after three decades during which high-fructose corn syrup had been gaining on sugar in the American diet. Consumption of the two finally drew even in 2003, according to the Department of Agriculture. Recently, though, the trend has reversed. Per capita, American adults ate about 44 pounds of sugar in 2007, compared with about 40 pounds of high-fructose corn syrup.

“Sugar was the old devil, and high-fructose corn syrup is the new devil,” said Marcia Mogelonsky, a senior analyst at Mintel International, a market-research company.

Boy, the folks at PepsiCo have super-crazy-busy. Not to be out-done by Snapple, they also have some new stuff on All-Natural front:
The lineup includes a premium all-natural cola, called Pepsi Natural, to be released this month in 10 select markets, along with limited-time throwback versions in April of Pepsi and Mountain Dew. All three products will be made with all-natural sugar, and aim to take customers in a different taste direction.

The Feeling's Not Mutual

Pepsi's new branding demonstrates an apparent infatuation with Barack Obama, with ads about "hope" and a renewed America. Turns out the Obama administration prefers Coke.

From BrandFreak:

Obama himself doesn't care much for either beverage. (He prefers Honest Tea, apparently.) But as [Time magazine White House correspondent Michael] Scherer reports, his advisers tend to prefer Coke. "Several senior Administration officials are committed cola drinkers, and without fail they spend their days sipping from a can of Diet Coke, a product of Pepsi's chief competitor, Coca-Cola," Scherer writes. Devotees include Larry Summers, Obama's top economic adviser, who "rarely walks anywhere in the White House complex without a can of Diet Coke in his hand. He is well known for interrupting conversations to take another swig."
Scherer asked another White House official, who had a can of Diet Coke on his desk, whether the Obama administration had a clear bias for Coke over Pepsi. The official, who was granted anonymity, perhaps because he wasn't authorized to discuss such a sensitive topic in public, replied, "I think that's true. Don't most Americans?"

Ouch.

CANNED

Pepsi and their new fangeled logo have decided to split with Mr. Posh Spice, or David Beckham. While he's played about 5 minutes of soccer with the LA Galaxy, he's been endorsing mass checks from sponsors around the world. Looks like his injuries, the economy, and MLS' low exposure will make ol' Beckam look for a new "beverage" sponsor - perhaps Jones Soda - they'll even let you do your own photography.

Really . . .

Is this really the new Pepsi logo? Really? It looks like the logo got a little tipsy at the bar.

"The white band in the middle of the logo will now loosely form a series of smiles. A smile will characterize brand Pepsi, while a grin is used for Diet Pepsi and a laugh is used for Diet Pepsi Max. Mountain Dew will be rebranded as Mtn Dew."

Check out all the $1.2 billion worth of changes that Pepsi's undertaking.

PepsiCo CEO Adapts to Tough Climate

Ms. Nooyi: Brands go through ups and downs. Gatorade is an extremely strong brand. I think every five or seven years, you've got to change out the approach to the brand, because you need a new boost of energy to think about the next iteration. Brands never die. You only stop reinventing them.
